episode_narrativeUnseasonably dry weather and below normal rainfall, which became worse during the unseasonably warm summer months, caused an estimated $135,000,000 dollars in crop losses throughout the state of Maryland. Hardest hit among the eastern shore counties was Kent where 70 to 75 percent of all crops were lost. The corn harvest was 48 percent below 1996's level and yielded only 33.8 million bushels or about 75 bushels per acre. The soybean harvest was about 25 percent below 1996's level and yielded only 13.3 million bushels. During the month of August Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman declared the state of Maryland a primary disaster area. This made farmers eligible for low interest loans. On July 17th, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission issued a drought watch for the Susquehanna River Basin. The commission expected this watch to continue through at least November. Yearly precipitation totals through October 31st on a county weighted average were below normal in all of the Maryland Eastern Shore Counties, with the greatest deficits in Kent (-6.0 inches) and Cecil (-7.1 inches) Counties. Yearly totals farther south were skewed by the heavy rain that fell on August 20th. In the upper Eastern Shore Counties, the yearly precipitation totals were only about 80 percent of normal.
