episode_narrativeDrought conditions that began the previous month became acute during the first part of September, especially during the first three days of the month. Temperatures soared to between 95 and 105 over the south half of the state. Once again, high dew point temperatures did help relieve some of the stress on the row crops, but made it more difficult to cool livestock. Crops dried out quickly with numerous areas across the south half of the state reporting premature death in the corn, and pot abortion with the soybeans. Significantly cooler weather overspread the state after the 4th. Along with the cooler weather, came dew point temperatures in the 40s. by the 6th, significant damage had been done and for all intents and purposes the growing season had ended. Overall, estimates place losses around 20% of the corn and soybean crop across the south half of the state. Agricultural damage during the first several days of the month came to about $160,000,000.
