| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | A second cold snap hit the west central valleys of western Colorado early in the growing season. Reported minimum temperatures ranged from the upper teens to mid 20s. Between this event and the previous freeze in late March of 2003, the apricots were nearly a total loss. Since only a small percentage of apricots are grown commercially in these areas, no damage cost estimate was made for apricots. Among the commercially grown fruit, peaches sustained most of the damage. Combined damage to the peaches from this event and the previous freeze in late March was very significant, with about an 80 percent loss in the Grand Valley and up to 50 percent loss in some of the orchards in Delta County. Damage to other commercially grown fruits was again minimal. It is nearly impossible to determine the amount of damage to the peach crop from this event compared to the previous freeze event. Therefore, the 9 million dollar estimate of damage to the peach crop listed with this event is actually the combined total from this event and the previous freeze event of March 28-29, 2003. |
