At the same time, Glady registered minus 11 and Dailey had minus 9. Temperatures dropped below zero over the north central lowlands early on Wednesday morning the 22nd. Belington and Stonewall Jackson Lake near Weston both recorded 8 degrees below zero. Middlebourne of Tyler County was minus 7. Grafton and Philippi had a minimum temperature of minus 6. Clarksburg saw a minus 4 temperature. During the daylight hours on Thursday the 23rd, the high temperature on the mountain top at Snowshoe was 5 degrees below zero. The low temperature that night was 10 below zero at Snowshoe. On Monday the 27th, the coldest readings came from the western lowlands, away from the rivers. Along Lockhart Fork near Sandyville of Jackson County, the thermometer dropped to 17 degrees below zero just after dawn. Other preliminary readings for that morning were minus 9 at Cairo, minus 8 at Creston, minus 7 at Grantsville, minus 6 from Clarksburg, and minus 5 from both Glenville and Parkersburg.The monthly average temperature for January was 4 to 6.5 degrees colder than normal. It was the coldest January for many counties in 9 years, or since 1994. Outdoor work and construction were slowed. |
