Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeSeveral reinforcing bouts of arctic air bring snow and extreme cold to western Montana. By the morning of Feb. 6, many valley locations saw air temperature readings between 30 and 40 degree below zero which caused businesses and school systems to close.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeThe Seeley Lake Ranger Station COOP recorded low temperatures in the mid-20s below zero Fahrenheit for 4 days straight. The coldest low temperature recorded was -41 deg. F on the morning of Feb. 6. This COOP also observed its coldest maximum temperature of -1 on Feb. 6 which broke the all-time February coldest maximum temperature of 2 degrees set back on Feb. 8, 1994, since records began in Oct. of 1936. The Snowbowl ski area closed down due to a power outage and dangerous wind chills between Feb. 4-5. The Point 6 RAWS sensor at 7,905 ft., recorded a wind chill of -63 deg. F at 7:59 am MST on Feb. 5. Other coldest minimum temperatures include: -37 Potomac, -34 F Condon, -33 F Greenough Hill, -32 F Condon and -31 F 3 miles northeast of Bonner.
