| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | An unseasonably warm March set the stage for a devastating freeze event across northwestern Arkansas in early April as many crops showed extensive new plant growth following the early and prolonged warm spell. An arctic high pressure system spread into the region and resulted in unseasonably cold temperatures from the 4th through the 9th. Overnight temperatures dipped into the 30s over much of the area beginning on the morning of the 4th. Northwestern Arkansas endured freezing temperatures for the following five mornings, including several mornings of temperatures in the teens and lower 20s. |The freezing temperatures were devastating to Arkansas' crops, prompting the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to declare an agricultural disaster for a number of counties in Arkansas including Benton, Carroll, Washington, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian. Preliminary estimates indicated that the crop damage will probably surpass $100 million. Crops that suffered damage included wheat,|corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, rice, bermuda grass, peaches, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, tomatoes, apples, grapes,|plums, cherries, pears, figs, and pecans. More than half of the tomato crop was damaged or destroyed, and 75 to 100 percent of the year's peach, grape, blueberry, plum, and fig crops were destroyed. |
