| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | An Arctic blast brought freezing temperatures to Central, South Central and Southeast Kansas. Freezing temperatures started the evening of the 4th in Central Kansas, the 5th for South Central Kansas and the 6th for Southeast Kansas. The freeze peaked the morning of the 7th as lows bottomed out in the lower 20s. The Arctic outbreak came to an end during the morning hours of Easter Sunday.|Although temperatures rose above freezing during the daytime hours, the prolonged and bitter cold temperatures wreaked havoc on Kansas crops. The winter wheat crop suffered the most damage as the freeze happened during the jointing stage. Freezing temperatures during this phase of wheat growth causes moderate to severe damage to the plant. But even this depended on when the farmer planted their wheat. The 50th annual Wheat Quality Council, which tours Kansas to assess the potential crop yield, noted that in some areas there was no noticeable freeze damage while a field across the street was nearly 100% damaged.|The bulk of freeze damage occurred in Central Kansas, traditionally the heart of Kansas wheat production. The cost of damage to the winter wheat crop from the Easter Weekend freeze is not known, but estimates place it at hundreds of millions of dollars. |
