Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeThe coolest, full-sunshine day of the young winter on December 26th, where highs only reached the mid and upper 50s with continued very low humidity, set the stage for one more chilly night in Deep South Texas prior to rapid return of more seasonable weather later on the 27th. Across nearly all sheltered areas from the Rio Grande Plains through the King Ranch, temperatures fell to freezing shortly after midnight and continued until the predawn hours.||This would be the sixth minor freeze of the autumn/winter 2010 for locations from Zapata County to the King Ranch.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeProxy observations from the Remote Automated Weather Station at the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge near San Manuel (minimum: 27 degrees, freezing for 7 hours) and the cooperative observer at Armstrong (Kenedy County, 31 degrees) argue for several hours of freezing temperatures across much of the King Ranch, particularly along and west of Federal Highway 77, during the pre dawn hours of December 27th. The cooperative location at the Lebh Shomea House of Prayer east of Sarita did not fall to freezing, influenced by return flow from the nearby Gulf of Mexico.
