| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | A strong push of cold air invaded Iowa during the morning of the 10th. Most of the northwest half of the state fell below freezing on the morning of the 10th, with all of the state recording a killing freeze by the morning of the 11th. In addition, the seasons first significant snow fell over parts of central, southwest, and west central Iowa with 1 to 3 inches of snow recorded. The heaviest was over the southwest and far west central counties. The snow was very early, with Des Moines recording 1.1 inches. That was the earliest occurrence of a 1 inch or greater snowfall on record. With the previous summer being one of the coolest on record, crop development was 7 to 13 days behind normal. As a result, only 70 to 80% of the corn crop was mature and soybean harvest was behind normal. The freezing temperatures ended the growing season. This reduced the weight of the immature corn crop that was stunted by the frost and caused some fields of soybean pods to freeze and crack open, thus dropping their beans. Crop reductions statewide were estimated to be on the order of 2% of the total crop. Estimates placed the corn crop losses around $75,000,000 and soybean losses around $50,000,000. |
