Weather forecast office sourcewfo_sourceAWOS
Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeA strong cold front swept across Deep South Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley during the overnight and early morning of December 9th and 10th, bringing periods of sustained gale force winds to the Laguna Madre and adjacent Gulf of Mexico waters out 20 nm, as well as a prolonged period of sustained winds of 30 mph with frequent gusts between above 45 mph, generally between 9 PM on the 9th and 6 AM on the 10th, most pronounced near the coast.||Behind the front, temperatures struggled through the 50s despite ample sunshine on the 10th, setting the stage for the first freeze of the young winter the following morning.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeClear skies and light winds allowed temperatures to plummet across mainly rural central and southern Jim Hogg County during the morning of December 11. While temperatures at higher terrain, generally above 500 feet, may not have reached freezing, lower elevations likely fell to or below 32 for at least two hours just prior to sunrise, based on interpolation between similar cooperative observations at least a cooperative station (Brooks County, to the east), and one airport location (Zapata County, to the west).
