Snowshoe dropped to 17 degrees below zero during the morning of the 16th. For dawn on Saturday the 17th, a clear sky, calm winds, and a snow cover, allowed temperatures to drop even colder in the sheltered valleys. Glady was 25 degrees below zero. This was the coldest temperature in the state since February 1996. Some other minimum temperatures on the 17th included minus 18 at the Elkins airport, minus 17 at Bartow, minus 16 at Belington, and minus 14 at Valley Head.
