Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeUnseasonably hot weather on the 5th led to many people heading to the Park Point beaches to cool off. During the late afternoon hours, the lake breeze pushed inland turning light westerly winds into dangerous easterly winds of 20 mph that created rip currents in a short amount of time. Four teenagers were caught in a rip current. Three were able to make it back to shore, but one had to be rescued about 100 yards out.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeFour teenagers were caught in a rip current after conditions quickly changed along Park Point. Temperatures had earlier been in the upper 90s with light westerly winds before the lake breeze pushed inland and dropped temperatures over 30 degrees in 20 minutes as winds turned easterly at about 20 mph. This led to 4 to 6 foot waves at the beach and rip currents. Two women were able to get back to shore while a man attempted to help another teenager when they were separated. That man was able to return to shore by the other teenager was swept 100 yards out by the rip current and was rescued by the Duluth Fire Department and St. Louis County Rescue Squad.
