| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | A moderate to high rip current risk affected the east-central Florida coast over the Memorial Day weekend, in part due to long period swells associated with Tropical Storm Bonnie which passed far offshore. Three swimmers were caught in rip currents, two in Brevard County on May 29 and the other on May 30 in Volusia County. Two of the swimmers died shortly after the incidents and the third passed away in a hospital approximately two weeks later. |
| Event narrativeevent_narrative | A 62 year old man from North Carolina was caught in a rip current in Daytona Beach around 1000LST on May 30 and rescued by lifeguards, but became unconscious while being brought back to shore. Initial indications point to a stress-induced heart attack. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. Since the exertion of fighting the rip current likely contributed to the heart attack, this death was recorded as a rip current fatality. |
