| episode_narrative | Tropical Storm Gabrielle made landfall just before noon on September 9th at Cape Lookout National Seashore with a central pressure of 1007 mb and maximum storm surge of 3 ft. Maximum sustained winds were near 43 knots (50 mph). The storm moved north-northeast and exited the northern Outer Banks near Kill Devil Hills in the evening. Wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph were reported over the southern Outer Banks from Ocracoke to Cape Hatteras during the afternoon, however no damage was reported. Minor beach erosion occurred along the south facing beaches with an estimated storm surge of 1 to 2 feet. An estimated sound side surge of 2 to 3 feet occurred over Hatteras Island during the evening as the storm passed to the north. No damage was reported from this sound side flooding, however, water did briefly cover parts of Highway 12 near Rodanthe and Salvo. Significant rainfall occurred across southern Craven and eastern Carteret counties during the afternoon. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 8 inches were common in this region with minor flooding of a few residences north of Beaufort. Property damage due to fresh water flooding were minor in Carteret county estimated at $5K. |
