event_narrativeStorm surge apparantly caused by a seiche effect from maximum surge along Mainland Monroe flooded the Gulf side of the Lower Keys. Storm tide was measured at 6 feet in Key West and 8.5 feet from Cudjoe Key through Big Pine Key. Most islands flooded to some extent with Key West 60 percent inundated. Secondary roads and U.S. 1 impassable in many locations...with over 1000 homes severely damaged from 2 to 3 feet of inundation. Numerous boats broke free from moorings and were grounded along U.S. 1 in the Saddlebunch Keys.
