Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeOn December 27, a low pressure system west of Emmonak at 995 millibars was moving northwest toward Saint Lawrence Island and deepening. A cold front was moving east-northeast toward the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta. A strong pressure gradient was noted between the trough, which extended into the Gulf of Alaska, and a 1055 millibar high sitting over the northern Yukon territory of Canada.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeSea wall damage was reported by the Alaska State Emergency Operations Center as caused by storm surge. However, after review, the following factors lead us to conclude the damage was caused from rough surf (not storm surge):||The mean wind direction and magnitude were from the east southeast peaking around 38 knots measured at Togiak on December 27, around 9 pm AKST / 6 UTC. The observed tide data at Clark's Point remained below the Maximum Astronomical Tide. The swell direction was parallel to the coast.
