| episode_narrative | The combination of a developing northeaster and Hurricane Wilma caused minor to moderate tidal flooding along both the ocean and Delaware Bay with the afternoon high tide on the 25th. The wave action also caused severe beach erosion. Large waves associated with both systems exacerbated the problem. In Fenwick Island, the tides washed over the bulkheads along Fenwick Island's bayside properties. Many residents were stranded along Dagsboro and Schultz Streets until the tide receded. Del DOT closed Delaware State Route 1 in Dewey Beach. Another section of the roadway was also closed south of Dewey Beach. Waves were even reaching the boardwalk at Bethany Beach at low tide. In Rehoboth Bay, roadway tidal flooding backed into Arnell Creek (Lewes and Rehoboth Hundred) and spread across severeal roads including Marshall Road in Old Landing. Bayside flooding also occurred along Dickinson Street in Dewey Beach. In Delaware Bay, a few roads along the bay were flooded at high tide in Lewes. The pounding surf (waves were reported to be 7 to 10 feet) crashed against the World War II Tower at Gordon's Pond. The waves crested over the protective dunes at Herring Point and caused severe eroison. The tidal flooding and the pounding surf was caused by the combination of Hurricane Wilma and a second northeaster that formed closer to the coast. While Wilma tracked well offshore, the northeaster formed just east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina during the evening of the 24th. It moved northeast and by the morning of the 25th was located about 100 miles east of the Delaware coast. It continued to intensify and was located just southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts on the afternoon of the 25th and about 50 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts during the early evening of the 25th. By 2 a.m. EDT on the 26th, the northeaster was just south of Maine. The intense onshore flow through the night of the 24th and into part of the day on the 25th prevented the previous high tide from receding. In spite of a less favorable wind flow (north to northwest) for tidal flooding on the afternoon of the 25th, minor to moderate tidal still occurred with the higher of the two astronomical tides of the day. |
