| episode_narrative | A rapidly intensifying low pressure system tracked from off the Southeast US coast on Christmas Day and then past the Mid Atlantic Coast on Sunday December 26th to just east of Long Island by early Monday morning December 27th. This intense low pressure system spread snowfall into the region Sunday morning, with bands of heavy snow plus embedded thunderstorms and very strong winds affecting the region Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. ||The blizzard resulted in severe beach erosion and minor to moderate coastal flooding for much of the North Shore of Suffolk County and the Twin Forks of Long Island. Because of the slow movement of the intense storm, seas were able to build and funnel into the coastline on a long northeast fetch. The high wind speeds were of moderate duration and resulted in very significant beach erosion, particularly during times of high tide. Five to 7 foot wind waves on top of a 2 to 3 foot surge was likely responsible for the severe beach erosion. Across the north facing extreme eastern sound and twin forks, this was likely exacerbated by interaction with open ocean seas of 14 to 16 feet with long period east swells.||The additive effects of wave action on top of surge, particularly along Long Island Sound and the Twin Forks, which are unprotected by barrier beaches likely compounded the erosion. The combined effect of surge and waves had major impact on the immediate shoreline in terms of beach erosion, washovers, and waterfront damage. |
| event_narrative | High surf and high tides caused flooding of roads and damage to a multi-million dollar home in Montauk's Soundview section Sunday night December 27th, with the beach stairs gone, the lower decks ripped away, and the entire foundation compromised. Storm surge also ripped away bulkheads in front of homes along Captain Kidd's Path, with the Montauk Bell Buoy washing at the end of the path. In addition, moderate beach erosion was reported at Montauk area parks. |
