episode_narrativeA pair of nor'easters caused minor to moderate tidal flooding along the ocean and Delaware Bay from the evening high tide of the 15th into the morning high tide of the 19th and minor tidal flooding along the Delaware River from the morning of the 16th into the early afternoon of the 17th. Tidal flooding extended into the inlets and back bays. In addition to the tidal flooding, heavy surf contributed to and exacerbated the erosion along the ocean and lower Delaware Bay. Several major roadways were flooded and closed.| |Along the ocean and lower Delaware Bay, minor tidal flooding began with the afternoon high tide on the 15th. Moderate tidal flooding then occurred with the morning high tides on the 16th through the 18th. There was also pockets of moderate tidal flooding with the evening high tide on the 17th. ||In Monmouth County, roadways were closed in Monmouth Beach, Sea Bright and Manasquan. In Ocean County, on Long Beach Island, a couple of miles of Long Beach Boulevard were closed. Other roads were also closed in Ship Bottom and Manahawkin. In Manahawkin, pilings debris closed East Bay Avenue. In Atlantic County, roads were closed along the back bays in Egg Harbor Township, Galloway, Ventnor and West Atlantic City. In Cape May County, a state of emergency was declared on the 16th. On the 16th, in Sea Isle City, a school bus with 15 students on board had to be rescued from flood waters. The National Guard was deployed to help with a few evacuations in Avalon, Lower Township, Ocean City, Stone Harbor, West Wildwood and Wildwood. Major roadway closures due to tidal flooding included the 9th Street Bridge (New Jersey State Route 52) to Ocean City, the Townsends Inlet Bridge between Sea Isle City and Avalon and the George Reading Bridge (New Jersey State Route 47) between Middle Township and Wildwood. In Avalon, by the Townsends Inlet Bridge an overwash of the seawall at Ocean Drive caused 20 feet of road shoulder to collapse on the west side of the roadway. Other road closures were reported in Sea Isle City and Strathmere. Four feet of water accumulated on some roadways in West Wildwood. ||The immediate shore took an erosion pounding from several days of northeast winds. In Raritan Bay, minor erosion occurred in Old Bridge, Union Beach, Keansburg, Bayshore and Port Monmouth. Along the ocean in Monmouth County, vertical cuts averaged 3 to 6 feet, but reached 8 feet in both Sea Bright and Asbury Park. In Ocean County, vertical cuts also average 3 to 6 feet with many municipalities reporting damage to dune fencing. But, vertical cuts reached up to 9 feet in Point Pleasant, up to 10 feet in Island Beach State Park (with a dune cut near Fisherman's Walkway), up to 10 feet in Loveladies, up to 13 feet in Harvey Cedars, up to 10 feet in North Beach, and up to 8 feet in Long Beach Township, Brant Beach, Beach Haven and Holgate. In Beach Haven, minor washover occurred at Merivale Avenue. in Holgate, an access road was washed out in the Holgate Natural Area. In Atlantic County, vertical cuts averaged 2 feet, but reached 6 feet in Ventnor. In Cape May County, vertical cuts averaged 1 to 3 feet, but there were wide variations reported within townships. In Ocean City, an 8 by 14 foot cut in the dune occurred from Pennyland Avenue north to the 9th Street Bridge. Geotubes were exposed along Surf Avenue. In Sea Isle City, vertical cuts reached 6 feet at the south end of the municipality. In Avalon, vertical cuts reached up to 12 feet between 11th and 26th Streets. In Stone Harbor, a 6 foot by 10 foot dune cut occurred from 100th through 115th Streets. In Cape May City, a 10 foot high by 6 foot wide dune cut occurred for 300 feet at Wilmington Avenue. Minor beach erosion also occurred on the Delaware Bay side of Cape May County.| |In Cape May County, the highest tides occurred with the morning high tide on the 17th. Elsewhere along the ocean, the highest tides occurred with the morning high tide on the 18th. In Cape May (Cape May County) at the Ferry Terminal, the tide reached 8.16 feet above mean lower low water. This was the highest tide since February 5, 1998. Moderate tidal flooding starts at 7.7 feet above mean lower low water. In Atlantic City (Atlantic County), the tide reached 7.20 feet above mean lower low water. This was the highest tide since October 7, 2006. Moderate tidal flooding begins at 7.0 feet above mean lower low water. In Sandy Hook (Monmouth County), the tide reached 8.21 feet above mean lower low water. This was the highest tide since March 19, 1996. Moderate tidal flooding begins at 7.7 feet above mean lower low water. ||Along tidal sections of the Delaware River into Burlington County, minor tidal flooding occurred from the late morning of the 16th into the early afternoon of the 17th. The highest tides occurred with the late morning high tide on the 16th. At Reedy Island, (New Castle County, Delaware) the tide reached 7.42 feet above mean lower low water. Minor tidal flooding begins at 7.20 feet above mean lower low water. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the tide reached 8.23 feet above mean lower low water. Minor tidal flooding begins at 8.20 feet above mean lower low water.||The first nor'easter moved from the Tennessee Valley on the morning of the 14th to the northern North Carolina coastal waters on the morning of the 15th and then moved rapidly northeast and by sunrise on the 16th was already southeast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The second nor'easter formed off the Delmarva coastal waters on the 17th and drifted very slowly east farther offshore as it intensified slowly. It was located about 250 miles east of Cape May, New Jersey during the afternoon of the 18th and then accelerated to the northeast and passed through Nova Scotia on the morning of the 19th. As these nor'easters formed and moved offshore, a high pressure system remained over nearby Canada and northern New England; both combined to maintain the onshore flow.
