episode_narrativeA very strong atmospheric river combined with a cold, dynamic area of low pressure produced significant snowfall across northeast California and the Sierra Nevada. Two to three-inch per hour snowfall rates were observed along with blizzard conditions which shut down US 395 from Mammoth to the Nevada State Line. Other road closures occurred across the Sierra Nevada during the event. Several schools and businesses closed across the region. Extreme avalanche danger also occurred in the Eastern Sierra. An avalanche occurred on US 395 within Walker Canyon, which pushed a Caltrans truck into the Walker River with injuries noted.
event_narrativeMultiple avalanches occurred in Walker Canyon with up to 15 feet of debris covering US 395. A snow plow was hit shortly after midnight the 28th and pushed into the Walker River.
