episode_narrativeAn expert skier and backcountry enthusiast was caught in an avalanche that ripped through Nellie Bowl in the Bear Creek Basin backcountry, just south of Telluride. The skier survived the 1800 vertical feet ride straight through the Nellie Mine rock couloir. The skier sustained 2 broken vertebrae in his cervical spine. The victims two companions along with two skiers from another party witnessed the avalanche and began a beacon search of the lenghy slide path, and soon located the victim at the bottom of the slide zone, on top of the snow. The victim was airlifted to Telluride and then to Grand Junction for medical treatment.
