| episode_narrative | A shallow, early snowpack and dry start to January created a layer of weak faceted snow near ground level. New snowfall through late January into February produced a dense slab over the weaker faceted snow which created conditions favorable for avalanches. |
| event_narrative | A trio of skiers entered Mushroom Bowl near Vail Ski Area. One skier jumped off a 30 foot cliff onto the snow below and triggered an avalanche which started at the 11,450 foot level. The avalanche path was 100 feet wide and 300 vertical feet. The skier who initiated the avalanche was swept off his feet and carried into a group of small trees, where he received non-life threatening injuries, then became fully buried under one to two feet of snow from a secondary avalanche. The other skiers where able to dig him out then self evacuate from the avalanche site. |
