Upon concluding this work, ski area personnel decided to open portions of the area to directed skiing. The last group of the day was a group of 14 customers and one ski patrol member. An avalanche was triggered by a skier on a south-southeast facing slope at approximately 12,500 feet. The crown face was 330 feet wide and ranged in depth from 16 inches to nearly 12 feet.
